The beginning
You see a typical rod at the ferrule as it comes to us.after

This is what it looks like after we strip , wrap and dip the section. moremore
As we do the restoration, the rod becomes alive, like it was 50-70 years ago.detail

We pay attention to detail.

I have my dad's rod, what should I do?

Many people want to take care of the rod they receive. Some want it to look like it did when their Dad bought it. Some want a "wall hanger", some want to fish it. We take all rods and strip it down to bare bamboo and start over.

  • First we examine the rod for any defects, delaminations, splits, breaks, etc.
  • We make a "footprint" of the rod, making note of the locations of the guides, signature and all intermediate wraps, and most importantly the color of the thread for the wraps and the intermediates.
  • Remove all the guides.
  • Reset the ferrules if need be.
  • Strip rod to bare bamboo, while maintaining all signatures, decals that are on the rod.
  • Wash with alcohol.
  • Prepare the sections for the 1st dip in varnish.
  • After the sections are dry, they are lightly sanded.

Now comes the rest of the prep work.

  • We clean the guides and the cork, reel seat.
  • Polish the metal parts.
  • Re blue the metal parts if they were already blued and are in need to be put back into proper condition.
  • Clean and check the ferrule fit.
  • We then start layout of the guides and securing the guides for the wrapping.

Next phase of the restoration.

  • We match the color of the thread that was on the rod, in some cased, people want their rod wrapped in a color other than the original.
  • We wrap the rod, wrap the signature wrap and any intermediates that may be on the rod.
  • After wrapping we apply a color preservative on the thread. In some cases the wraps were translucent, in which case we do not add the "CP" to the thread. With some colors it requires several coats of CP to be able to maintain the color after dipping.
  • Finally we dip the rod and let dry in a lint free space. The rod gets at least 3 coats of Spar Varnish with sanding between coats.
